Speaking My Mind 12-6-11

I think a lot of D-list “celebrities” are getting DUIs in order to get some free press. Which is a shame because they are putting the public at risk.

High and Low

High: J.Crew Dani Dress, $268.

Low: Target Xhilaration Dress, $24.99.

Christmas Books

Here are a couple of Christmas decorating books I’m thinking of buying. Don’t know why though. I’m not creative and have given up on trying. I’m sticking with super simple, super traditional Christmas decorations. I am no longer trying to keep up with all those blogging mommies with too much time on their hands. Martha Stewart I am not.

The Art of Gift Wrapping: 50 Innovative Ideas Using Organic, Unique and Uncommon Materials by Wanda Wen.$17

I will wrapping my gifts in gift wrap I bought on sale after last Christmas and ribbon. Said ribbon will be in plain bows. Any fancy bows will be store bought.

Christmas with the First Ladies: The White House Decorating Tradition from Jacqueline Kennedy to Michelle Obama.$20

I dream of a room with higher ceilings for one reason, I want a huge Christmas tree. But alas, my family wants to stay in our tiny house (despite the serious increasing risk of being shot), so it’s low ceilings for me.

Desired Objects

The thing I want most of all for Christmas is a strand of Sixties era pearls. Not real ones, but a strand of costume jewelry like Jackie Kennedy.

4Moms Origami

The Origami stroller by 4moms will finally be available in January. You can pre-order the stroller which will cost $849.99. If you want an Origami in any color other than black and silver you will have to pay another $99.99 for the Color Kit. Also available is an adapter for Graco car seats, a bassinet, and a cell phone pouch.

The Origami is a power folding stroller (Don’t worry there is a sensor that prevents it from folding when a child is in the seat.) that features a LCD screen that will tell you how far you walked and how much battery power you have left. The battery power is generated by the rear wheels, and can be used for the folding, the lights, or even charging your cell phone.

Features include

  • Power-folding
  • Built-in generator
  • LCD interface
  • Child safety sensors
  • Pathway lights
  • Daytime running lights
  • Four-wheel suspension
  • No disassembly required
  • One-push brake
  • Sunroof
  • No “kick zone”
  • Zero pinch points
  • Low-force motor
  • Reflective piping
  • Four cup holders
  • Lots of storage
  • Reclining seat
  • Luggage-style pull wheels
  • Recyclable materials
  • Responsible Return program
  • Manual override

You may also want to read about the Foppapedretti Myo Tronic that pushes itself. But I think it just a show piece that may not even make it to market. Foppapedretti doesn’t even have it on their website.

Toddlers Smoking

Is it art? Artist, Frieke Jannsens has created a series a lovely photographs of children, The Beauty of an Ugly Addiction? They remind me of movie studio photos from the Thirties. The problem is the children appear to be smoking. The photos are bound to create an uproar. But why? None of the children are actually smoking, the smoke was added. Because children will be influenced by them. Hogwash! Very few children will ever even see the picture. And so what if they do? I used to smoke bubblegum cigarettes as a child, and I never even tried a real cigarette. Children are more influenced by the people around them.

What do you think of the photographs?
